India ended Day 2 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with its first medal of the campaign, as athletes gave inspiring performances in para powerlifting, swimming, boxing and lawn bowls.The biggest highlight of the day was para powerlifting, where Jhandu Kumar bagged a bronze in the men’s heavyweight event to open India’s medal tally. The Bihar lifter, who overcame polio and financial struggles to reach the international stage, finished with 130.9 points after successfully lifting 181kg and 190kg. He missed out on a Commonwealth Games record by failing to clear the 196kg attempt. Fellow Indian Sudhir placed sixth. India came close to adding another medal in para powerlifting as Ashok Malik finished fourth in the men’s lightweight event with 143.8 points, barely missing the podium. Paramjeet Kumar finished seventh.In para swimming, Karthik Budigina narrowly missed a medal after finishing fourth in the men’s 100m Freestyle S13 final with a time of 57.57 seconds. Teammate Imam Ali settled seventh after both Indians advanced from the heats earlier in the day.The start of Indian boxing is also positive. Jadumani Singh advanced to the men’s 55kg pre-quarterfinals after defeating Scotland’s Aaron Cullen by unanimous decision. She will next face Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman for a place in the quarterfinals.In swimming, Srihari Nataraj missed out on a place in the men’s 50m backstroke final after finishing seventh in his semifinal.India continued its impressive run in the lawn bowls. The women’s pairs team of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh registered their second consecutive victory by defeating South Africa. In the men’s singles, Putul Sonowal backed up his opening-day upset against world champion Ryan Bester by beating Falkland Islands’ Cecil Alexander in a tense tie-break.With a bronze medal, India ended the day joint ninth in the overall standings.
