Supreme Court fines Samay Raina Rs 3 lakh for disobeying orders, making false statements in ‘India Lurk’ controversy: ‘You have deceived the court’ | Hindi Film News
The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed costs of Rs 3 lakh on comedian Samay Raina for allegedly making false statements in court and failing to comply with the court’s earlier directions in connection with the proceedings arising out of the Indian Submarine controversy.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi and JV Mohana directed Raina to deposit the amount within two weeks and warned of enforcement action in case of non-compliance.“You have taken the court for a ride,” the bench said while delivering the order. The matter came to light after content creators Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchiraniwith the Cure SMA Foundation, following the controversy surrounding Raina’s comments in the first season of India Undercover.During the proceedings, senior advocate Aparajita Singh told the court that despite assurances given to the court, Raina allegedly failed to contact the Cure SMA Foundation or individuals suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).“Samay Raina is doing a show but not contacting the SMA Foundation or people suffering from SMA as ordered by the court. I don’t know what kind of youth idol he is. I shudder just thinking about it,” Singh submitted.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, also expressed concern over Raina’s conduct. Speaking about a recent performance by the comedian, Mehta said Renner seemed to be mocking the ongoing legal battle.“Recently, he started a new show. He said that now, initially, he was doing something that he had not done in the previous series. He was hanging nimbu-mirchi. He did not name anyone but the reference was quite obvious,” Mehta told the court. The Solicitor General said he initially chose not to raise the issue but did so after learning that Raina had allegedly failed to comply with court instructions regarding the SMA Foundation.Renner’s lawyers responded that the failure to contact the foundation was not a result of self-consciousness and assured the court that efforts would be made to persuade the comedian to comply.
