NEW DELHI: There is a lot of speculation ahead of the third ODI against England at Lord’s that Rohit Sharma may play his last one-day international for India. The veteran opener responded to the rumors in his own style, hitting a brilliant 138 off 110 balls. His innings included 17 fours and five sixes as he almost guided India to the record chase.England posted a massive 387/3, and despite a good effort by Rohit, India fell 27 runs short at the end of the series. In an interview with BCCI.tv after the match, Rohit said that he did not care about the outside noise and remained focused only on helping the team.“Look, my job is to bat. Come and play. Represent my country, represent the team. That’s what I’ve been ordering since my debut. That’s what I’m going to do,” Rohit said.“The noise… Since I made my debut, was there and until the time I’m gonna stay here, it’s always gonna be there. So it doesn’t really matter too much. What matters is what I do on the field. Try and contribute to the success of the team. That’s my only focus now,” the former Indian captain said.“And leave the noise there. You know no noise. No fun. My work is inside, their work is outside, that’s how I see it,” added Rohit.
Retirement rumors ahead of Lord’s ODI
Speculation was rife on social media ahead of the Lord’s match that this would be Rohit’s last ODI in Indian colours.However, the 38-year-old reminded everyone of his class with one of his best ODI knocks, keeping India’s chase going until the closing stages.Earlier, The Times of India reported that Rohit’s place in India’s ODI XI is no longer guaranteed, with the selectors planning to select players based on form and fitness as preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup begin. The report added that the door remains open for Rohit to continue, as long as he continues to perform consistently.Rohit is currently just 12 games away from becoming only the eighth player in ODI history to complete 300 matches. He played 288 ODIs and scored 11895 runs at an average of 48.95, including 38 centuries and 62 fifties.
