Veteran playback singer S Janaki, fondly known as the nightingale of South India, passed away at the age of 88. She died at Apollo Hospital in Mysore. While she was in hospital being treated for an age-related condition, she suffered a cardiac arrest. “Ms. S. Janaki was admitted to Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysore on July 11, 2026 at 12:49 pm. On admission, her condition was critical and she was immediately assessed and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further treatment,” a press release from Apollo Hospitals, Mysore said.“Despite careful medical care and continued monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, she suffered cardiac arrest during the course of treatment,” the statement added. Immediately begin advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) according to standard medical protocols. Despite resuscitation efforts, she suffered multiple cardiac arrests and could not be revived. She also said that her decades-long contribution to Indian music deserves the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. During his illustrious career, Janaki won 4 National Film Awards and an unprecedented 33 National Film Awards across multiple languages.Janaki began her illustrious playback singing career in 1957 and went on to become one of India’s most famous voices. Over the decades, she forged iconic collaborations with composer Ilaiyaraaja and legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, creating countless timeless songs in multiple Indian languages. She has sung in more than 20 languages throughout her career, but has been battling health issues since the past few years.Her immense contribution to Indian music has earned her several prestigious honours, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award and the Padma Shri Award. The University of Mysore also awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the field of music.Janaki married V Ramaprasad in 1959. After the death of V Ramaprasad, she made Hyderabad her home and spent her later years there. As news of her death became known, tributes began to pour in. Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, CM Vijay Joseph and many other celebrities have expressed their condolences to her.
