2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV: the five most important things to know
Mercedes-Benz India has just launched the new 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class in the Indian market. For 2026, the luxury sedan has a host of improvements aimed at staying ahead of the competition in the ultra-luxury segment. While the overall design remains unmistakably S-Class, the latest model brings subtle styling revisions, upgraded technology features, enhanced connectivity and enhancements that further elevate the ownership experience. In this article, let’s look at the first five things you need to know. Drivetrain The 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered with a single hybrid powertrain option. Notably, it is the first S-Class to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in India, combining a petrol engine with an electric motor for improved efficiency and performance. It’s powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol straight-six engine paired with an electric motor that produces a combined 435PS and 680Nm of torque. Power comes from a 22kWh battery, which Mercedes-Benz claims can provide an electric-only driving range of up to 115 kilometers under ideal conditions.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission, and it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The S 450e’s 22 kWh battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes using a 60 kW DC fast charger. The plug-in hybrid luxury sedan is claimed to deliver a fuel efficiency of 32.2 km/l on the WLTP test cycle.Design In terms of design, the updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class retains its overall design profile, although most of the visual changes are concentrated at the front end. The facelift introduces a larger radiator grille with star-patterned chrome inserts and an illuminated bezel, while the Mercedes emblem on the bonnet is now illuminated. The redesigned headlights are larger and feature triple daytime running lights in the shape of a three-pointed star.

Mercedes-Benz has also equipped the sedan with its latest micro-LED Digital Light technology, which the company claims improves lighting by 40 percent. The system also includes high beam ultra-range lights that can illuminate up to 600 meters ahead. Changes on the sides are relatively limited and include newly designed alloy wheels. The luxury sedan now includes multiple cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors to support upgraded driver assistance functions. At the rear, the main update comes in the form of slimmer LED taillights with three-pointed star light elements, similar to those seen on the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Interior, characteristics On the inside, the updated S-Class gets a glossy black dashboard look that includes three screens, which Mercedes-Benz calls Superscreen. The setup includes a 12.3-inch driver display, a passenger display and a larger 14.4-inch central touchscreen that controls most of the vehicle’s functions. The sedan also adopts the latest MB OS digital architecture, integrating systems such as lighting, cameras, suspension and powertrain controls. The software supports cloud connectivity, artificial intelligence-based functions, Google Maps navigation and vehicle-to-everything technology.Rear seat passengers will continue to get twin 13.1-inch entertainment screens, while the previous rear control tablet has been replaced by two smaller touch controllers. The cabin retains the leather upholstery and optional wood trim, while the climate vents are now integrated behind illuminated metal panels with electrically adjustable airflow controls. Most of the vehicle’s functions are controlled via a touchscreen interface and capacitive shortcut controls. The car also has facial recognition via a dashboard-mounted camera, which additionally supports video calling and cabin monitoring. Rear seat comfort remains the main focus, with the long-wheelbase version continuing to offer up to 43 degrees of seat recline, along with heating, ventilation, massage functions and an optional four-seat layout.Price, variantsThe 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in two main variants – the Launch Edition Exclusive Line priced at Rs 2.20 crore and the premium Manufaktur Edition AMG Line priced at Rs 2.38 crore (both ex-showroom prices). Compared to its predecessor, which was priced at Rs 1.85 crore, the new S-Class commands a premium of Rs 35 lakh at the entry level.

Reservations, deliveries Interested buyers can book the new S-Class by visiting their nearest dealership, and deliveries are expected to begin around Diwali in the fourth quarter of 2026. The luxury sedan competes with the likes of the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 L in the Indian market. While Mercedes-Benz India has not officially confirmed the assembly route, the new S 450e appears to be imported as a CBU, which also explains its significant price premium over the outgoing S-Class.
