Karnataka launches one-year bilingual classroom training program to train 65,000 teachers
In a bid to strengthen bilingual schools, the Directorate of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) has jointly launched a year-long state-level workshop with the Regional Institute of English-speaking South India (RIESI).The workshop focused on enhancing the implementation of bilingual education in public schools by providing district resource team members with the knowledge and skills needed to support teachers in this area. Course content includes experience sharing and solving classroom challenges, baseline assessment, teaching English through textbook-based pedagogy, effective teacher presentation and classroom language and familiarity with English, EVS, Mathematics and Kannada textbooks with special emphasis on identifying difficult learning areas and classroom strategies.The workshop marked the beginning of a year-long teacher mentoring program in bilingual schools under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of Karnataka. After the state-level workshops, the trained district resource teams will conduct district-level workshops for the key resource persons (MRPs), who will then organize cluster-level workshops for teachers. From July 2026 to March 2027, DRT and MRP will jointly implement a year-long comprehensive academic support program for approximately 65,000 teachers in Karnataka to strengthen bilingual teaching practices in government schools through face-to-face workshops, regular online follow-up meetings, classroom guidance and ongoing academic support.About 389 DRTs were trained between July 21 and 21, 22 and 23, 2026.
