India’s weightlifting contingent added another medal at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday as Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched silver in the women’s 53kg final.This is India’s fourth weightlifting medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (women’s 48kg – gold), Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg – silver) and Muthupandi Raja (men’s 65kg – silver) also finished on the podium in their respective categories. Weightlifting consists of two disciplines – the snatch and the clean and jerk – with each lifter getting three attempts at both.In the snatch, athletes lift the barbell from the ground to the surface in one continuous motion with a wide grip. In the clean and jerk, they first lift the bar over their shoulders (clean), pause, and then drive it overhead (jerk), holding it steady until the buzzer.Gyaneshwari lifted 88kg in the snatch to finish second. Nigeria’s Onome Didih led the field with 93kg, while Canada’s Groulx was third with 83kg.The standing after the snatch:

In the clean and jerk, Gyaneshwari successfully lifted 111 kg. However, Didih managed 113kg to maintain his lead and bag the gold medal, leaving the Indian lifter with the silver.The 23-year-old from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh totaled 199kg (88kg snatch + 111kg clean and jerk) but Nigerian Onome Omolola Didih stole the show with an incredible 206kg (93kg + 113kg), rewriting the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records.This is the fourth weightlifting medal for India at the CWG and fifth medal overall.
