A Pune study on oral therapy for diabetic retinopathy presented at US Global Ophthalmology Meeting
PUNE: A Pune-based study on an Ayurvedic oral therapy that may reduce the need for repeat eye injections in patients with diabetic retinopathy was recently presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2026 in Denver, US. ARVO is one of the world’s largest scientific conferences for vision research.The study evaluated Timirex-R, an oral nanotechnology-based formulation developed by Rasyani Biologics, as a potential adjunctive treatment for diabetic retinopathy. The research was presented by Dr. Yogesh Bendale, who represented Indian Traditional Medicine Research at a conference attended by nearly 11,000 ophthalmologists and vision scientists from around the world.The study was conducted by a team of Dr. Yogesh Bendale, Dr. Avinash Kadam, Dr. Ketaki Jagtap and Dr. Prajakta Pote at Rasayu Ayurveda Clinic.Diabetic retinopathy, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in people with diabetes, is typically treated with repeated intravitreal injections to control retinal damage and preserve vision. However, these injections often require multiple hospital visits and can place a physical, emotional and financial burden on patients.The researchers said the patients included in the study had limited improvement despite receiving multiple eye injections. They said optical coherence tomography (OCT) images showed reduced retinal swelling and favorable structural changes after oral treatment.The team reported that approximately 90% of patients observed did not require repeated eye injections during the study period. They also stated that no serious adverse events were observed. The formula is patent protected in the United States and several other countries.Commenting on the findings, Dr Yogesh Bendale said the study reflects the potential of combining traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern scientific methods. “ARVO’s selection of this study provides an opportunity to showcase Indian research on an international scientific platform and encourages further evaluation of such treatments through empirical studies,” he said.
