‘Three Habits That Change Everything’: From 54% of Class 10 students to IIT Bombay CSE, how one student’s return inspired thousands
Every year, thousands of students lose confidence after receiving disappointing results in board exams. Some people come to believe that one bad grade permanently closes the door to their dream college.Jainendrajeet’s journey tells a very different story.Today, he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science from IIT Bombay, one of the most popular engineering courses in India. But just a few years ago, he had scored 54% in the Class 10 examination, with 41 out of 100 marks in Mathematics and 48 out of 100 marks in Science. All his friends scored above 90%, but his performance was criticized. For a moment, he even doubted his ability. However, in 2023, the student surprised everyone by scoring 99.98 in JEE Main, AIR 349 in JEE Advanced (open category), and ranking 54th in OBC.His story reminds us that one test can never determine a student’s future.
“I thought the result was not mine.”
Jainendrajeet, who narrated his journey in a YouTube video, said he was not eagerly waiting for his Class 10 results. He had been on bed rest for nearly 40 to 50 days before the exam, missed several classes, and knew his preparation had been affected. While studying with friends on Zoom, someone sent him a message saying that the results had been announced.“I opened the website, looked at my score, and froze. My first thought was, ‘This can’t be my result.'” I refreshed the page and checked my roll number again, but it was. My score is 54%. “He remembers staring silently at the screen. No tears. No anger. There was only one question in his mind.“Why did I get such a low score?”
The hardest part isn’t the score
As friends started sharing their scores, reality became harder to swallow. Some people scored 80%.Everyone else is over 90%.Some even reach 98%.“I had the lowest score in my entire circle of friends,” he recalls. What worried him more than the markings, however, was people’s reactions.“I was scared of what my parents would say.”He said he barely spoke that night. But amid the disappointment, another voice emerged.“This isn’t you. You’re better than this.”This idea changed everything.
This decision changed his life
Instead of blaming circumstances or accepting failure, Gyanendrajit decided to rebuild himself. Not for society. Not to silence critics. But for himself.“If I want to achieve something meaningful in life, excuses no longer work.”He started planning each day.He fixed his study time, reduced distractions, limited social media, only used YouTube to study, and gradually turned nearly 10 hours of study a day into a part of his daily work. However, this transition will not be easy.
There were days when he doubted himself
He openly admits that math felt impossible at first.Physics scares him.Chemistry refuses to stay in memory. Some days, despite reading from morning to night, he felt like he had accomplished nothing.“There were many times when I truly believed that JEE was beyond my capabilities.”Whenever depression sets in, he turns to his friends for help. One lesson stayed with him throughout his journey.“Your best teachers are often your friends.”
From Mathematics 41 to JEE Advanced AIR 349
Perhaps the most striking part of Jainendrajeet’s journey is his transformation into mathematics. The student, who scored just 41 out of 100 in Grade 10 math, aced one of the country’s toughest entrance exams. His efforts paid off amazingly. In JEE Main 2023, he scored 99.98 points.Soon after, he scored AIR 349 in JEE Advanced (open category) and OBC rank 54, and got admission in Computer Science at IIT Bombay. It’s a remarkable turnaround for someone who once thought his academic future was over.
Three habits that change everything
Looking back, Jainendrajeet attributes his progress to three simple exercises. The first one is to learn each topic by watching YouTube educational videos before class to make the class lectures easier to understand. The second is to set clear daily learning goals instead of relying solely on motivation. Finally, he solved the Previous Year Questions (PYQ) immediately after completing each chapter as they helped him understand how the concepts are practically tested in JEE.He believes these habits are more important than complicated study plans or expensive tutoring materials.
More than an IIT story
Stories about IITs usually start with the top students from the school who consistently score above the 95th percentile.Jainendrajeet’s journey is remarkable because it begins with disappointment.A student who scored 54% in Class 10, with 41 in Mathematics and 48 in Science, through persistence, discipline and perseverance finally secured a place in one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India. For thousands of students preparing for JEE, NEET and other competitive exams, his journey carries a reassuring message.Your current score reflects a moment in time. They don’t determine the rest of your life.Sometimes, the most painful results become the beginning of the greatest comebacks.Disclaimer: This article is based on Jainendrajeet’s personal account shared in public YouTube videos and other information available in the public domain. His academic journey, learning methods and experiences are all his own. Exam results vary from student to student, and there is no formula that guarantees success.
