Due to concerns over El Niño, the Central University of Rajasthan has moved some semester courses online until August 14
Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ) has decided to conduct classes in online mode for the upcoming single semester till August 14, 2026 due to concerns over possible El Niño phenomenon and the need to conserve water on campus.Previously, weather forecasts showed that the El Niño effect may occur and weather around the world will be disrupted. Rainfall is forecast to be below normal, raising concerns over water shortages in Rajasthan.As per the school’s order, the single semester will begin on July 15, but all academic activities will be conducted online first. The school said the arrangement was temporary and introduced as a precautionary measure to ensure effective management of essential resources while maintaining the academic calendar.
University sees water management as main reason
University officials said the move to online instruction was intended to reduce pressure on campus water resources. The institution requires nearly 350,000 liters of water daily to meet the needs of students, faculty, residence halls and other campus facilities.While the university currently has adequate water reserves, officials said the decision was made to prepare for any adverse conditions that may arise from below-normal rainfall.“While there are adequate water arrangements currently in place, the temporary shift to online classes will help in better management of available resources,” an official told Press Trust of India (PTI).The government described the move as a precautionary and proactive step and stressed that academic activities will continue without interruption despite temporary changes in teaching models.
Instruct teachers to continue teaching without interruption
The school has instructed all faculty and staff to conduct online classes according to the notified schedule to ensure attendance and academic progress are maintained.Faculty members whose summer vacation ended on July 14 have been instructed to report to university campuses and conduct online classes starting from July 15.At the same time, teachers whose vacation ends on July 21 will be required to resume academic duties from that date and continue to hold classes as planned.The university also stressed that departments must ensure a smooth transition to online learning so that students do not face any disruption to their studies for a month.
